SPEI: moving money in Mexico
A practical guide to CLABE numbers, SPEI references, payment receipts, and Mexican peso transfers with Lex.

The local transfer behind many everyday payments
SPEI is Mexico’s interbank electronic payment system, operated by Banco de México. It lets participating institutions move money between accounts. If you send pesos from one Mexican bank to another, SPEI may be the system that carries the payment. For the recipient, the useful result is a peso balance they can spend or withdraw.
A domestic transfer and an international remittance are different journeys. Someone paying from a US or European bank may first need to fund a service and convert dollars or euros. SPEI can then deliver pesos locally. Calling that last step fast does not tell you how long the earlier steps will take.
This distinction matters when you promise a family member money by a certain day. Identify when the sender’s money leaves, when it becomes available for conversion, and when the receiving account is credited. A complete estimate should cover all three, including any first-use verification.
The account details to request
A CLABE is an 18-digit standardized identifier for a Mexican bank account. Ask the recipient to copy it from their banking app or account statement. Keep all digits, including any leading zero. A debit-card number, a phone number, and a CLABE are different identifiers even when a bank supports more than one way of finding a recipient.
Also request the account holder’s name and the bank name. Enter each detail in the field requested by the sending service. A form accepting 18 digits is a useful format check, but it cannot tell you that your aunt owns that account. Verify changed bank instructions through an established contact, especially when they arrive unexpectedly in a message.
If a provider asks for the account type or additional information, use the recipient’s actual details. Do not choose a plausible option just to move to the next screen. A mismatch can make a routine payment harder to identify or cause the receiving institution to reject it.
A reference is not the same as a tracking key
A transfer can contain a payment concept, a numerical reference, and a tracking key. The concept helps describe why you paid. A reference can help a recipient match a payment to a bill or operation. The tracking key identifies the transfer for investigation. Keep the confirmation that contains these details instead of relying only on a screenshot of the amount.
If Lex or its provider supplies a reference for your deposit, copy it exactly into the requested field. Adding a friendly message in its place can interfere with matching the money to your operation. Use the current instructions even if you made a similar deposit last month. The receiving details may be specific to the new operation.
For a family payment, agree on a recognizable description without exposing unnecessary personal information. For a provider deposit, the provider’s instructions take priority. The same payment network can carry both kinds of transfer, but their reconciliation requirements can differ.
How to check whether the money arrived
Banco de México provides the Comprobante Electrónico de Pago, or CEP, for qualifying SPEI payments. Its portal asks for information such as the date, institutions, amount, and reference or tracking key. SPEI payments normally move in seconds, but the bank or provider can add checks before or after that network step. The receipt helps document an actual transfer; a payment request or an edited image sent through chat does not provide the same evidence.
Start by checking the sending institution’s transaction status. If it reports a completed transfer but the recipient cannot see it, compare the destination details and use the available tracking information. The absence of a CEP immediately after sending is not, by itself, proof that the money is lost. Save what the portal reports and contact the institution responsible for the relevant stage.
Never publish a complete receipt in a public support thread. Share the necessary details through official support channels. If the payment is returned, ask for the return status and timing before resending. A second transfer does not repair the first and may create two successful payments.
Using SPEI in Lex
In Lex’s transfer screen, choose sending or receiving, select the amount, and continue to the methods available for your account. For a bank deposit, choose the Mexican peso route when it is offered. Follow the operation’s instructions and any verification request. Mexican deposit instructions should not be assumed to be a permanent reusable personal CLABE.
When sending to Mexico, choose the bank-transfer method and add or select the intended recipient. Check the CLABE, name, and payout currency. Read the quote as an exchange between what you pay and the pesos expected in the destination account. If the route is missing or unavailable, a supported peso asset in your wallet does not make the bank transfer available automatically.
Keep the Lex operation record alongside the bank receipt. They describe different parts of the journey. A blockchain confirmation can establish that an asset moved without establishing that the final peso payout has been credited. The recipient’s account remains the place to verify spendable money.
An example: euros in Madrid, pesos in Puebla
Lucía wants to send part of her euro salary to her mother in Puebla. Before funding anything, she checks whether her Lex account offers euro bank funding and a Mexican bank payout. She confirms her mother’s CLABE and compares the complete route with other services using the same total euro budget and the same receiving method.
Lucía records the estimated pesos after conversion and payout costs. She does not compare a wallet balance with a competitor’s bank deposit quote: her mother needs pesos in a bank account, so that is the endpoint for every comparison. If the euro transfer takes a business day, an otherwise fast SPEI payment will not eliminate that initial wait.
Once the funds are available, Lucía reviews the current payout quote and confirms. Her mother checks the credit in her own app, and both keep their receipts. For future monthly transfers, they can reuse a verified recipient where supported, while checking each new quote, limit, and delivery estimate. Familiar details reduce effort; they do not freeze exchange rates.
